Story Synopsis:
The Empiricist looks at two major issues: why are the results
of modern medical treatment so poor, and what makes a great
relationship. The story is about Winston Beaumont, and his
fiancée Claire Redding. Winston has graduated from
medical school, and is now training at Mid-City hospital
to be an internist. Claire is the librarian at that hospital.
Soon after we meet Winston, he begins to encounter patients
who are feeling quite debilitated, even though it has been
several years since their diseases were cured. They have
many severe symptoms, but appear to have no pathology (no
abnormally functioning physical tissues) to explain their
symptoms. These situations really bother Winston, and he
searches wide and far for a solution for these people's
sufferings. By the end of the movie, he has discovered why
these sufferings exist; and that discovery leads to a major
life changing decision.
When Winston first realizes the problem, he gets more and
more depressed; which stimulates Claire to do what she can
to lift his spirits. But he refuses to respond to her efforts,
which upsets her. Eventually they have a major blow-up after
which she has a long talk with her friend Eileen. During
that conversation, Claire discovers several new awarenesses
about quality relating; and soon, her relationship with
Winston is better than ever. But, then, while at a family
reunion, she has more relating difficulties. And it is back
to another conversation with Eileen; which results in more
breakthroughs. By the end of the movie, Claire has also
made a life changing decision.
The movie opens with several scenes from the 1800's, where
we visit some of the scientists who established the foundations
of modern medicine; Charles Darwin (evolution), Gregor Mendel
(genetics), Louis Pasteur (the germ theory), and Antoine
Bechamp (who disagreed with those other three gentlemen.
Running time is 165 minutes.
